FAQs About Emergency Dental Care
What qualifies as a dental emergency?
Severe pain, swelling, infection, trauma, or a knocked-out tooth typically require urgent care. If you're experiencing intense discomfort, visible swelling, bleeding that won't stop, or damage to a tooth, you should call our office immediately. When in doubt, call us. Our team will help you determine how urgently you need to be seen. Can a knocked-out tooth be saved?
Yes, if treated quickly. Immediate care increases the chance of successful reattachment. Keep the tooth moist, in milk or between your cheek and gum, and get to our office as fast as possible. Do not let it dry out.Should I go to the emergency room for dental pain?
For most dental issues, a dental office is better equipped to treat the source of the problem. ERs can prescribe antibiotics and pain medication for infections but cannot perform dental procedures. The only exceptions are severe infections causing difficulty breathing or swallowing, facial trauma involving the jaw or facial bones, or uncontrolled bleeding, those warrant an ER visit. For everything else, call us.How soon should I seek care for swelling?
Immediately. Swelling may indicate infection or abscess and should be evaluated as soon as possible. Left untreated, dental infections can spread to the jaw, neck, and in rare cases become life-threatening. Don't wait to see if swelling resolves on its own. What if my dental emergency happens outside of office hours?
Call our office, our voicemail will provide guidance for after-hours situations. For severe infections with systemic symptoms (fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, significant facial swelling), go to the nearest emergency room. Will I be seen the same day?
We make every effort to accommodate emergency patients the same day they call. Patients from Bryan (77802, 77803, 77807), College Station (77840, 77843, 77845), and across the Brazos Valley can call us and we'll prioritize getting you in as quickly as possible. Let our team know you're experiencing a dental emergency and describe your symptoms so we can triage appropriately.I'm not a current patient, can I still come in for an emergency?
Yes. We welcome new patients for emergency care from Bryan, College Station, Brenham, Caldwell, and anywhere in the surrounding area. Call our office, let us know you're a new patient experiencing a dental emergency, and we'll get you in as quickly as possible.
